I love that site, not sure I'd be happy to use that as a training course to fix my £7k Brietling tho..... As it is I cant even get the back off my bulova. Is that because there's some oddity about yours? I thought those were snap backs, with the possible addition of four back screws on some models? No oddity, and not hugely valuable, it has a screw back. Very tightly screwed on. Its this one www.mybulova.com/watches/1970-chronograph-3794With a German made Rowi Fixo Flex expanding bracelet of similar vintage. If I could get the back off I'd buy a cheap utlra sonic bath and clean it and lubricate it

A fiver buys you a cheap thing to try, if you haven't already. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Watch-Repair-Back-Case-Opener-Wrench-Screw-Cover-Remover-Tool-Kit-UK-Seller-/331747990684I looked at yer actual watch cleaning machines the other day - £450 plus, but they use petrol and baskets and heaters and all sorts, not just ultrasonics and water (though I'm tempted by one of those for cleaning up little things too). I'd really like a record cleaning machine, but they cost more than my vinyl collection is worth, or ever will be. Edit, of course, now I've actually bothered to look at your link, that tool would be Entirely Useless to you. But I'll leave the ebay link in case anyone else wants such a thing.

Zero, I didn't find much. I did find that Bulovas have and do use LH threads in various parts of their watches. I could not find out for sure whether or not the back of your watch is LH.

The crown wheel rotates anticlockwise, so the screw holding it in is usually left hand thread in any given watch (so it tends tighten rather than loosen as the crown wheel turns). Unless there are multiple crown wheel screws, in which case they will be right hand thread.
Some screws are marked with extra bars, slots or colours to indicate left/right hand thread.
I only know this from the youtube watch man, not through any innate knowledge.

The problem if you want to DIY watch repair is obtaining the correct tools. A decent set of left hand jewellers screwdrivers costs an absolute fortune although I have a set I'm willing to sell.

What is a left hand screwdriver? I didn't know there was such a thing. Or rather, what's the difference between it and a right hand one?

What is a left hand screwdriver? I didn't know there was such a thing. Or rather, what's the difference between it and a right hand one? The faces of a left hand screwdriver are machined to mate with the slot in a left hand threaded screw more securely so that the force required to turn the screw is applied along the full length of the slot and the screw is less likely to be damaged. I thought everyone knew that.

You're making that shit up. Otherwise I'd need a doing up screwdriver and an undoing screwdriver.
