Sidelights were on permanently if the engine was running on all my dad’s 144s and 244s. His first one was registered in 1970. People used to flash their lights at him to tell him they were on. Which eventually became slightly annoying for him I think.

Well yes. What light sensor? The height of automation in the 1980s was a second pair of push switches so that the rear doors also operated the interior light (singular — none of your ‘ambient lighting’ then either.)

The light sensor that sets the dashboard lighting to stun during daylight hours and winds it back at night, possibly ?
It's possible Mercedes and Volvo were doing things in the 70's others hadn't yet thought about or chose to implement. Both manufacturers had been running seat belts that self recoiled for a couple of decades by then while other manufacturers were still operating fixed belts designed to trip you up as you got out the rear seat of a 2 door car or landed specifically in the door aperture when you tried to close the door.

I'm sure top end American cars had auto lights or something similar in the 70s. Don't know how well they worked.

What happened to the motorcycle brigade who were claiming about 20 years ago that cars running with DRLs meant that their motorcycle headlamps no longer stood out enough on the roads? (ie only they should have lights on in the daytime!)

In some countries you have to wear hi-viz, looking like a UK, council hedge trimmer. I think it's France want hi-viz reflectors on helmets too.
Waste of time these days, half the mouth breathers behind the wheel of SUVs don't care, they're protected it doesn't matter if they hit something or something hits them.
