That's where I struggle with one pedal driving in an EV. In a city it works as generally you're either accelerating or braking, there really is not much opportunity for cruising at a constant speed with a constant throttle, I've sat in a traffic jab at 2am in West London.
Unless you're a Motorsport driver of some sort your are not on the throttle or brakes therefore it's got to be more efficient to leave the energy in the battery rather than sending it around the loop. Yes, scavenge the excess, for example slowing for a corner. When cruising at a constant speed it makes no sense to be pulling the energy out to send it back. It only takes around 10bhp to maintain 60mph. Switch off regen and when cruising at a constant speed with no regen and no throttle applied 2kW is being sent back to the battery as an electric motor is automatically a generator if it is not consuming and working as a motor. In urban driving, it saves wear and tear on the brakes and recoups a bit of energy which would otherwise be wasted. Switch it off on a motorway. Is there any more to it than that?

Exactly. I bang on about how likeable I find the iX3 but I particularly like the way it just rolls frictionlessly on in D mode, without even engine braking to slow it down. It makes motorway driving much more relaxing than the town-biased i3, and probably contributed to the 3.5+ miles per kWh efficiency I got on the M3 to Winchester.
A nudge of the selector puts it into one-pedal B mode, in which it just feels like a big i3. I should just buy one, shouldn’t I?

Some cars you can't switch the regen off completely. The one's that always have an element of regen are what I was getting at as wasting energy sending it around the loop.
Totally get one pedal for city driving, wasted elsewhere unless you're on the Nordschleif.

If you were going to buy one I think you would have done so already, you'd be halfway through the three year lease by now. There's something at the back of your mind either waiting for the next iteration OR you can't bare to say goodbye to your wafty CLS 👺🔥

I think my hesitation has a couple of causes. I really don’t like the look of the thing, which shouldn’t matter. But I spend tens of hours every week with a view that consists of the side of my car. The chrome ‘aerofoil’ outline of the CLS’s windows helps to compensate with a happy little aesthetic buzz. I’d quite like its replacement to offer something similar, but the iX3 is more a shape to be tolerated than admired.
And then there’s money. My unscientific impression is that a lightly-used iX3 would cost me about £6000 less today than I might have paid last autumn, which makes me glad I didn’t sign for a new one in September. Other used options are getting cheaper too, and that’s made me reluctant to commit myself, although I suspect the price curve is flattening now. The absence of an urgent reason to replace the CLS gives me licence to bide my time.
I’m pretty sure the iX3 is the big EV I’d find easiest to live with. But I look at the iPace (inefficient and questionably reliable) and the Polestar 4 (expensive and untried) and wish I could have something with that sort of design flair. But perhaps it doesn’t matter.

Remind me what was wrong with the i4? Is it internal passenger space?
I only ask as I saw one yesterday whilst walking the dog, a neighbour appears to have bought one. Nice looking thing, despite being a modern BMW.

I was browsing a local KIA dealer's website yesterday and came across an EV9 they have fur sale. You could get one in brown and pretend it's a garden shed.

BMW i4, that was it, the car that replaced the VW id3 thing my friend had. He didn’t like the VW, but he does like the BMW.

Any space for a garden shed man cave between your home office window and the cars ? Nice idea but no room, I’m afraid. A work-shed in the back garden might work, though - no cars at all round there. The i4 is too small inside for me. The closely-related 4GC has (just) enough space but the batteries below the i4’s floor squeeze the occupants against that low roof. Pity, because it’s a nice thing and efficient because of its shape.
