I wasn't going to watch them but then it was clear that things were going well for Team GB so I had a peek....
I am in awe of Laura Trott. She makes everything look so effortless (I know it is not..). Well done her, and good luck for the remainder of the Omnium. And well done all other GB competitors. A credit to us all. The mental effort put in by Justin Rose in the golf, the pace of Mo Farah, strength of Andy Murray. Just wonderful.
It really brings it home when a gold medal winner just sobs when they realise what they have done. Makes Premier League footballers look like the bunch of whingers that they are (and I speak as an MCFC season ticket holder).

Team GB have done very well. UK Sport are acutely subjective and selective about what sports they finance, but it works. Cavendish however, let the side down with his "accidental" wiping out of his rival (No-one likes him, even in Team GB) and I'm glad his victim climbed painfully off the track to beat him to gold.

I couldn't work out the animosity between Cavendish and Wiggins, especially as Wiggins, despite being a bit alternative, seems to enjoy good relations with his team mates. Anyway Trott will soon be either a very happy Mrs Kenny, or more likely Dame Laura. Sublime last night as was her husband to be.

Courtesy of Will Ferrell...
"I was watching women's beach volleyball at the Olympics and there was a horrible wrist injury. The doctor said it was a sprain and I should back to 100% in a week"

Just watched the Ladies Hockey final, GB won in the penalty shoot out. Very dramatic, very tense. Jeez those girls are scary tough.

I really enjoyed the women's golf - and not because they look like real women rather than rather tall pre-pubescent girls - it was genuinely exciting.

My daughter plays now and trains at a club who have their facilities right next to Reading HC, who provided 3 players to the ladies' Olympic team including the married Richardson-Walshes. She seems to have the knack for it and children often progress up to the more demanding Reading club if they're good enough. Time will tell. I used to be a player myself, started as a striker and moved back trough the team as the years progressed, finishing my career in goal, which I ended up enjoying the most. Am tempted to come out of retirement for my daughter's club's veteran's team. Maddie Hinch absolutely amazed me in the Olympics, brilliant performance. Without her I don't think they'd have done it. As usual though, the keeper is receiving lesser plaudits than the glory hunters up front. Can you tell I'm not bitter?
Terrific and underrated sport, especially as a spectator sport. Reading and Slough are two of the top clubs in Europe, perhaps they'll benefit from a bit more attention and improved attendances now.

Good game, hockey. I was unfortunately crap at it, as I am at most ball games. My girls both play well though and when I England I enjoy watching them very much.

Anyone watching the Winter Olympics. I decided only to watch the Curling as firstly I like the sport and secondly there is limited involvement from those cheating little b******s called China and Russia. They are so brazen about everything they do, I don't understand the mentality. It is as if Putin and Xi have never grown up from the playground. And the IOC just watches and smiles the stupid smile of the three monkeys.
But then I read about the failure of the British Skeleton team in this morning's paper. Seems that the ahtletes are all fine, working hard etc, but the backroom squad have failed to provide them with the best tech, so despite being world class participants, they are down in the very low reaches of the scoreboard due to mistakes made in getting the best kit. One could argue that this is a poor workman blaming his tools but as with F1, it is a combination of best driver with the best car. If you don't have both you are unlikely to win.

I was going to say that in professional sport, having the best kit was totally and utterly vital, whereas amateur sport should be played with standard equipment. But then the question arises of what exactly is amateur sport these days and how do you improve the quality of the standard kit if there is no incentive to do so. The Olympics started off in 1896 with good intentions but clearly they have been ditched and replaced with making as much money as possible and turning Olympic employees into virtual royalty.

I watched the men's giant slalom yesterday, and after the top 20 blokes had finished and the placings were awarded (narrow defeat for an outsider from Slovenia, who I had been cheering on), they showed the runs of the lesser athletes representing countries like Ireland, India, Jamaica and even Timor Leste.
The slowest finisher was a minute and 10 seconds behind the gold medallist in the end - but I loved his comment in his interview, he said that because he'd finished at all he'd beaten quite a few bigger names from the usual countries like Austria and Italy.
This to me is the spirit of the Olympics. Good on him and all the other no-hopers. I wish I'd taken up skiing decades ago and had a pop at representing Malta in an Olympics. What an hounour it must be to even compete. Yes, I know WDB is right, the main thing is corporate sponsorhsip these days, but still, I do believe a real Olympic spirit does exist.

Even amateurs get caught up in the kit spirals. Whatever sport or activity you’re into there will always be a market to supply premium kit or equipment whether it be football boots, running shoes, golf clubs, bicycles or whatever.
I have “good” bikes but there’s no way I’d spend what some do to ride the same trails.
With most things I guess there is a sweet spot where you’re treating yourself to decent kit without over egging it.
Then of course there are cars eh?
