…but not forgotten. My son was driving his old Aygo on Sunday afternoon on a country road in heavy rain when his offside front wheel ran over some debris in the road on a bend and burst the tyre. He lost control and hit a 6 foot high brick wall head on at about 40mph. Real shame because he’s had his licence for five years now and had built up maximum no claims. Anyway, it’s a testament to the safety of modern (ish) cars that he emerged unharmed. Both airbags deployed and there wasn’t much recognisable car left beyond the windscreen. Shaken not stirred thankfully. The car and the wall fared rather less well. It’s all sorted with the insurance and yesterday we found a replacement car for him. He was looking to upgrade to something a bit more grown up anyway in the near future, but of course his insurance will be higher again next time so he has sensibly just gone for another Aygo. It’s three years younger than his old one and must be a higher spec as it has some twiddly bits like alloys, privacy glass, fog lights, a rev counter, leather trimmed steering wheel and gearstick etc Black this time. Picking it up on Saturday.

Oy! I really hope he is OK. What a bummer that this really was not his fault but insurers don't care about that. Good news that the old car saved him and the new car he will be familiar with.
Hope he gets back on the horse without too much stress!

Yeah, I went with him to view, test drive and subsequently agree to buy the “new” one and he was a bit nervous when he took the wheel. I’ll go out with him in it on Saturday afternoon I think.

Goodness me. Made my stomach lurch, reading that. I am delighted he's OK. Car, schmar.
My best wishes to you all.

Mind you, I might have sort of mentioned to him that his great-grandfather started driving in 1902, his grandfather began driving in 1924 and I started in 1975. None of the aforementioned ever crashed a car.
I’ve told him not to be too disappointed in himself… 😉

Oh dear. Glad he's okay. I know small modernish cars are tougher than older cars.

It was frankly astonishing to see how well the passenger cell remained unaffected. The whole front of the car (not that it’s very big on an Aygo) was crushed beyond recognition, but the internal cabin was fine.

Goes to show how things have improved crash structure wise and how energy is dissipated. Lucky it wasn't an original Mini!

To add insult to it all, he has a friend who today announced that he is selling his old, but well cared for MX5. My son has always coveted it but he’ll have to put that thought on hold for a while. Actually, I kind of covet it too, but even I’m not hard hearted enough to buy it and park it next to his new Aygo!

Glad to hear he's OK and jumped straight back on the horse.
See if you had a daughter you could have had a story in a red top with her looking sad with some scrap metal on show. Could have added some funds to the replacement car budget. That's the world we live in now isn't it.
It's funny how when something suits your needs you never think of looking at anything else. My wife did that following her first people carrier. Ordered exactly the same car, same spec when the lease was up. Wouldn't look at or consider anything else.

He was open to ideas, but rightly recognised that he would be better to stick with a low running cost car for now. We looked at VW Ups and their derivatives, Fiestas, Corsas, Fabias and so on, but the one he went for came up locally at a good price and with a good history, and as a distress purchase it’ll do fine. If he wants to trade up at some point then he’ll have to stump up the extra.

Should the thread title not be Ay-Aygo ? It's gone and he's bounced back with something that looks the same.

It sort of looks a bit like the old car’s evil twin. The previous one was a sort of electric blue, with steel wheels and very basic spec. This one is black with tinted windows and alloys and fog lights and extra dials and so on, even has a lid on the glovebox no less. Same weedy little engine though!
