It is a dilemma if you have a real hankering to change. My children are probably a bit older and have their own cars so the university run is not required for me. So I could change now for something smaller, more economical, just as fast and comfy, but I'm holding out for another couple of years (unless I see a good deal) to buy an BEV that suits both Espadrille and me to compliment her Clubman. Thing is, as has been mentioned by a few people, the tech in BEV is moving so fast when do you take the plunge ? It's like buying a computer or mobile phone, you know as soon as you commit it will be obsolete and a new faster, smarter, smoother, shinier BEV will come along very soon.

I don't think it really matters, so long as what you buy suits your needs. My Leaf is now pre-historic in comparison to the latest models, actaully the current 62kwh version is too. But mine does what I need it to do, so that's fine.

That is pretty. But the people here who might use it don’t want it, so it wouldn’t be worth the space it would occupy.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten your lot have quoshed the old SAAB idea. Tsk.
My lad reminded me yesterday he wants a 90s JDM classic. I don't think we'll be going down that route, considering probable insurance implications. He does like the Mazda 3, particularly the saloon, which is within the realms of the reasonable, but finding a non-rusty one in budget will be a challenge.

Something I meant to add to my comments on VW group DSG gearboxes was my thoughts on the ZF gearbox BMW uses (and others like JLR, VW group). The ZF 8HP is really smooth. And they have cleverly put the electric motor inline and only added 15mm to the overall length. I know VW, Volvo and others put the electric motor in their DSG gearboxes which are for transverse engines but it seems more elegant to have it this way. There is also a variant of the ZF with the mild hybrid electric motor instead.
What surprises me is that more cars using the ZF 8HP don't have at least the mild hybrid electric motor as a default because the battery pack would be small. I'm thinking many Jaguars, Bentleys, etc. The clever part has been done by ZF really. No need to stick a motor on the other axle etc.

Can’t pretend I understood all that but I think new 5s (and 6es, not that they’re coming here) went mild-hybrid last year. Or is that what you’re saying, just wondering why other makers aren’t doing the same?

Well, there’s a blue 630i in High Wycombe that will be ready for inspection on Monday, so I’m going to try it then. I have the week off, so I can at least have some fun finding out.

Yes - it seems it is relatively easy to do. I think the battery packs for mild hybrid are small enough to go under the passenger seat.

Mild hybrid is the term usually reserved for vehicles which can't move by electric power alone.
Usually 48v type systems where the alternator boosts performance while the internal, usually small capacity, combustion engine catches up and hits its poweband.

The motor industry seems to have settled on a more complex starter motor run off 48v is a mild electric which just assists with acceleration and helps cruise with the engine off.
But ZF's 8HP gearbox comes in a few hybrid related versions:
- Mild hybrid with a 15kW motor in the gearbox - Full hybrid with a 40kW motor in the gearbox (max range 5km) - Plug in hybrid with a 90kW motor in the gearbox
The mild hybrid version does only need 48v minimum. And I was wrong about the extra space needed for the gearbox in the 330e... it's an extra 30mm.

Monday didn’t happen because the car hadn’t arrived. We agreed we’d try Wednesday, only then the car did arrive but with an electrical problem requiring a part that will not arrive for several days. So it doesn’t look likely that I’ll get to try it this week. Which is a pity — but possibly a bonus for Škoda, whose Enyaq iV 80 Lodge (if I’ve put the capitals in the right place) looks like an awful lot of spacious EV for not much more than I’m about to pay for a similarly beaver-friendly i3.

Hey Dubya are you saying you might cancel the i3 and get an Enyaq, or that you might swap the CLS for an Enyaq and have a fully leccy fleet?
