Changing all the filters seemed to make up the bulk of the annual service work on SWMBO’s Mitsubishi recently. Easy money for dealerships? Unless of course they are charging you but not actually doing the work...

That’s a valid shout. I confess I never look at filters; the car is in an MB workshop every year (8000 miles even in a busy year for this one) and I just assume filters are taken care of then. I did manage to change the air filter in my dirtiest, most embarrassing engine — the one in my lawnmower— and that did make a difference, if not to the fuel consumption then to the blue haze that enveloped two gardens either side. Reckon I could tackle this one? Yes, you can tackle this one. The air and indeed pollen filters in my E320 were the simplest filters I've ever changed. Yours can't be all that different. I expect you'll first need to get the engine cover off the top, by means of torx screws, which should be simple enough. I used to do the oil and filter service myself on my E, it was an absolute piece of piss. Even the oil filter came out of the top and vacuum extraction of the oil was recommended. I used to actually enjoy servicing that car and actively looked forward to it. One of the couple of things I miss about it. Nothing I ever did though seemed to make a difference to mpg, but then again I've never really analysed it overly and it was whatever it was.

Hello
Just checked in and found this thread...
So, my car temp gauge rises to about 90C minimum when fully warmed up. I had to go to Gatwick last week and I did not do my usual max range driving but rather my 'I want to get there and back as quickly as possible' driving without getting caught speeding. Even then I managed over 40mpg.
I average about 32mpg usually but remember I do a large amount of urban/suburban driving.

Thanks Esp. Now if you go into the Mercedes Me app and read the temperature graph from the adapter (assuming your car has one) is that data consistent with the 90 reading on the gauge? Or does it show something lower, like mine?
I'll be going to Southampton again this week (hurrah!) so that will give me a long, full-speed run to generate some reliable data.

I will have to have a look - I need to reconnect the app to the module.

Since we like to go off an tangents in threads (well we used to)...
I haven't been too far in the BMW 330e on individual trips since getting it, especially motorway. I also only charge at Tesco and a Be-EV point at the moment so only top it up with electric. Last Fri and Sat though I got it to nearly 100% as it happens.
Anyway went a bit further on Sunday on the motorway and when I got on the M60 it said 11 mile electric range. It still said 11 miles when I got off the M62 at Liverpool. Did some local driving around Liverpool and had 1 mile range showing when I got back on the M62. When I got home the reported MPG was about 62mpg. Not bad. But when I work out how much fuel has been used vs. miles driven since I refuelled it seems to actually be 80mpg! Not bad at all. One change I have made is driving in hybrid mode and not total electric.
Last Monday I did a trip from home to Buxton down the A6 and back over the Cat and Fiddle and it did not have any charge showing. I got about 42mpg but there was a section of dual carriageway when I put it in Sport Xtraboost.... Used that and then slowed back down and used it again. This car can accelerate quite quickly as a PHEV.
We'll see how it does over the coming year. I might try charging up a bit at home when the weather improves.

On an equally relevant note, we had a cracking lasagne for dinner the other night. Really good, it was. 😛
(But I suppose it’s good to see someone else still alive in here.)

I'm sure he's fine, he only posts when he's "working".

...which he isn’t this week. Easter holiday break — remember his idea of going to Wales?

...I just suspect the range should be closer to 90 than 80. I’ll probably get to do a long run again soon. Now that I know where to find the data, I can repeat the snapshot then. And so I did, yesterday. 90 minutes, much at motorway speed. Still looks coolish to me.

I'm sure he's fine, he only posts when he's "working". Still here. I do not like reading and posting to forums on mobile phone screens, and I don't like spending my scarce holiday and weekend time glued to a phone. I also don't want to spend spare time looking at a computer or laptop screen. So I squeeze it in when I'm sitting at the computer being paid to do so in between tasks and calls etc. There's always a bit of time. I don't neglect any aspects of the work I'm paid to do. These days it's about "deliverables and value added", not time keeping. Or it should be, anyway. I'm glad you don't post on here whilst you're driving to Milan though (try that in a mutant 500X ), we have enormously different work.

Remember that cooling system has to get rid of heat generated at 150mph in 30+°C. I don't think 4°C variation is too bad.
