The Volvo wasn't such a bad choice after all. 400 miles in 5 hours 20 minutes much of which was restricted to 130 or 120. Half a tank of diesel & 45mpg with a roofbox on. If I had a V60 diesel and BEV for local journeys/commute would cover all my motoring needs. I really struggle to see where petrol fits in other than burning more fuel.

It was the only car with winter tyres so no other option really. Shame the Focus couldn't be enjoyed.

Fewer of the nastiest emmissions which diesel produces. Revvy engines. But yeah, EV is better short range, and diesel is better on a long motorway schlep of course.

I'm in the burn less of the refined crude oil camp. I don't think good emissions and bad emissions really cover it when you're burning three times as much of the stuff.
EU7 will treat them both equally harsh.
I saw a few very fast cars a couple of times today on the drive back. It appears they were sprinting between fuel stops. That was fun when I was younger now I'm more tortoise than hare.
The average speed over two days was 78mph. I thought that was pretty good for a ten year old diesel.

Before the apocalypse, I used to drive to and from Milan a couple of times a year with a roofbox on.
It is quite easy to forget that it's there sometimes. If you have the radio on.

Speaking of Milan, I was just looking at driving routes to Sarajevo, as a possible holiday plan if things open up enough this summer, to go and stay with my father-in-law who lives in a lovely isolated village up a mountain. It'd be total R&R. Google maps recommends the Calais/Belgium/Luxembourg/Germany/Austria/Slovenia/Croatia route, but only a couple of hours longer is the Calais/Lyon/Milan/Trieste/Ljubljana/Croatia route, which would involve fewer border crossings, which might be a consideration given the circumstances. Two days driving realistically, with a night's sleep halfway (either Milan or Salzburg, depending on the route we choose).
Pipe dream, I expect. We'll probably end up going to my Mum's in Wales.

I think all of the increased hassle at all of those border crossings will be the downfall of that plan this year Al. And They might not even let you enter Wales! 😬

Looking at the news this morning a bill being voted on today to go into law from next Monday £5,000 fine if you holiday abroad from the UK.
Of course there are exceptions one being of you have property abroad to sell and, you know, you need to stick around for a while or, god forbid, the sale falls through while you're abroad. That would be terrible.

Ah! thanks PBG. I did wonder how I was going to justify my hoped for visit to Israel this year to finalise my father's estate. Now I just need Israel to let me in....

Sheesh, and I've gone and bought a GB sticker now. £2.99 that cost me.

A blue one with the gold stars around the GB? That's what mine is.
