That’s a lovely car. Whether it’s a good example, I’m not qualified to say. My only thought is that it looks a bit too clean in places. I don’t want to eat my dinner off the engine bay, so I wonder what made someone think it needed such vigorous cleaning.

Like WDB, I'd hesitate to offer an opinion on its condition. All I can tell you is that a friend had one just like it a good while back, and it had several reliability problems while he had it. But, maybe he was unlucky, I wouldn't know. Looks nice. Bit big for a learner maybe? Not that it should matter too much I suppose, I learned on a Volvo 240, which seemed big, but probably wasn't really by today's standards.

Aye one of my best mates learnt in his Dad's Volvo 240. Good idea to learn in a big 'un.

Nice enough old Saab, if that floats your boat. But surely it’s way overpriced?! Wouldn’t Saab officianados really want the bigger engine, a metallic paint job, and -ahem- an automatic gearbox?! Isn’t this one a bit poverty-spec?!

Saabs were always better as manuals, especially after they got hydraulic clutches.

Sounds like the Triumph 1500 over the road from me is going to get dragged out and sent for scrap. They're employing a house clearance service. I've posted the question of its value on an owners forum, they're of the opinion it's about £500-700 in its current state. I don't think the elderly lady dealing with the house (it's a bit Mr Trebus) will have the inclination to try to find a buyer for such an unusual and unloved model of car for that sort of money. Especially as the house and plot is worth about £1.5m.

Spent today with house clearers. Considering the sales pitch is ‘we do it all for you’ how is it so bloody exhausting?

Idly browsing, as you do, the models of Aygo that we bought for my son more than 4 years ago, ( 2010 5 door manual ) at a similar mileage we bought it at, ( 39,000 ) are being advertised for more money than we paid then. We paid £3100 and there are still some on AT for more than that.
What goeth on one wonders?

Easy Humph: there are fewer brand new cars being manufactured and sold, so there is greater demand for used stock. There are simply fewer cars out there changing hands.
There must be some people out there who won’t be taking on a new 3-year PCP at the end of their current agreement. Their income may have changed, and/or they aren’t driving half as much as they used to. So that affects the availability of used cars for the rest of us..!

Other people are feeling the necessity to drive rather than use public transport, and a low-end, easy to park car is the obvious choice for many. So you’ve got increased demand as well as constrained supply.

Yep, we were talking about this recently when I was saying it's harder these days to find a £500 car in good useable order, and the lower threshold for what qualifies as a "cheap" car has risen somewhat in the last year for reasons described above. Just my sodding luck that I might be looking for a cheap starter car later this year...

Yes - we used this for my two sons. Very helpful for the odd drive out with a parent.

Used car prices are indeed getting a bit silly, possibly due to new car availability, dealers are really gouging at the moment.
I returned my wife's Grand C-Max last month. Three years old I could have bought it for 15,100€. The dealer or bank have paid off that balance and punted it out of the network. Three years old, 38,000kms, full main dealer service history.I found it online with a small dealer advertised at 21,999€
The dealer when I returned it said it needed a new windscreen. Not chipped or cracked just usual 3 year marks. I pushed that over to the insurance to sort out. They wanted 1,561.11€ for a new screen.

Dealers may feel that they are sitting pretty. Any presumed drop in demand for cars has evidently been offset by a lack of (good) supply. So I doubt that dealer staff have to do much work to get a sale.
New car sales in Jan & Feb are sharply up on this time last year (pre-Covid 2020) down here. Cheap finance of course, and for those people who don’t need any finance their savings aren’t earning anything at the bank so they are out spending. Nothing fancy though: the 3 top sellers are the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Mitsi Outlander!
