Sometimes, management can be persuaded to alter their opinions, particularly if they are encouraged to think it was their idea... 😉

I am pretty much convinced, as you kow, that the Leaf is the right car for most of the motoring we do also. Short local journeys, costs £150 a month in payments, zero VED and near zero fuel costs. Other peripheral bonus features like zero emissisons seal the case. It's not going anywhere, I don't know why you're so obsessed with trying to make your narrative fit. Sometimes, she's right. My circumstances are not yours, and vice versa, Humph.

Lots of talk about buying a car for the >95%+ of our driving and then renting for the <5% remaining. BUt I know no one who does it. I just want to get in my car and go, perhaps with a five minute stop to refuel before I get on the motorway.
I like the Mondeo/Punto option. Both are popular vehicles with a plentiful supply of cheapish parts and body panels available from breakers quite easily. Given the mileage you will be doing in the Mondeo I can't see repairs being a big item in the budget anyway, and unless something is an MoT failure or safety feature, for 1,500 miles a year do you care if something doesn't work properly, or is a bit bashed?

So my curiosity was piqued sufficiently to get a price for a two week rental in August from my local Enterprise rent-a-car branch. Vauxhall Insignia or similar - £656. And they don't list any estate cars, just MPVs and SUVs which are all even more expensive. A Zafira is £1022 FFS.
Sod that.

I've changed cars too often (23 in 51 years, not to mention about a dozen of SWMBO's)... That’s a lot of exes; amazing you can afford a car at all. 😈 I suppose £1000 to drive a Zafira for a fortnight might be fair, Vić. It’s unlikely anyone you knew would see you with it, and the cash would help towards the cost of the holiday.

Back to rentals and there's a local small company who want £450 a fortnight for a "large car", their list of possible models states VW Passat, Honda Accord, and, somewhat distressingly, Nissan Qashqai. An MPV (Touran pictured) is £975.

Always supposing holidays are an option this summer, there can be fewer more depressing cars to use for one than a Zafira.
Qashqais are not large cars, well, not inside anyway. Reasonable boot I suppose, but the cabin isn't any more roomy than any medium sized car.
I'm pondering on my son's car now. He loves his Aygo, but it's a tad small for moving mates, musical instruments and bikes etc. Not that any of that matters during lockdown. We could though look into getting him on the Nissan insurance for those occasions, or maybe fully pass that car on to him and get "her" something newer.
Might be good experience for him to get used to something bigger anyway.

Yeah give him the Qashqai, get the Mrs a Duster and then, oh, we don't really need this expensive, underpowered Merc now, do we? Can sell it and give son the proceeds as a deposit on his own flat.

Four people and luggage in a Qashqai during Summer 2019 in Iceland was a bit of squeeze. We managed and we only had two long trips fully loaded - but I would rather have had a proper estate car.

That makes a fair bit of sense actually. The caveat might be to keep the Aygo too as a hack for anyone to use when three cars are required at the same time.

There you go. I can sort things out for anyone, except myself.

Hang on a sec, I've just thought this through, he gets a better car, she gets a better car, I give up my more than adequately powered, but economical and rather pleasing Mercedes, and I get a part share in a Duster, an old Aygo and an old Qashqai, and get to pay for it all... 🤔

Nice one, WDB - but did you really think I'd put an apostrophe there if I meant wives?!!
The one certain outcome of the Al v Humph debate is that neither of them will end up with anything remotely like what the other is suggesting.
