There was one in the house we rented in Wales in August, and it got cold enough to use it - and I was impressed. Given that UK winters get milder every year, the number of days when a heat pump would be seriously challenged is minimal. It could still be supplemented for the coldest days by an existing gas boiler, or an electric system.

I've come to the conclusion that the likely cause of the boiler woes is/was a "sleepy" 3-port valve actuator. (largely because moving it manually caused the boiler to burst into life). This wasn't replaced when I fettled the valve a bit back, and I suspect it is reaching the end of its useful life. That's the problem with spring-return actuators; the motor, which is semi-permanently active against a spring, eventually weakens or gives up. (I did have a Mo-Mo version at one point which have a (much) longer life - but the valve gave up on that instead ). Anyway, I knew I had that Mo-Mo actuator stored away because it's incompatible with the current valve, but in checking I find I also have a spare, compatible actuator as well, so, if the diagnosis is correct, if it goes again, a bit of wiring should fix things. (or not )

Probably still best not to start the job on Christmas Eve though. Just saying.
Rinsed off the bikes just now, went out on them yesterday and got them super muddy. Looked at the cars, and thought quite hard for a few seconds about washing them too, they certainly need a clean. But decided it was too cold, and that they'll just get dirty again this week anyway. Best leave it till the clocks go forward eh...not long now.
What about George Russell then? Good lad, bet he's going to put the wind up Bottas for a few laps anyway. Just goes to show how much difference the car makes. Best keep an eye on Verstappen too.

Doh, I’d managed not to know anything about it until then. Going to watch it on Ch4 at 10.00. Don’t post anything else about it until then please.

I shouldn't watch it, you'll fall asleep.........not.
The bit where the aliens land on the track and the safety car hits them and then evaporates is probably the least interesting.

By the way, you can tell that some of those F1 drivers are driving gods.
Just and no more kissing the kerbs and so on...

...then a Westfield (I have a dim memory someone used to have one of those) driven by Fangio apparates from the wreckage and leads to the final bend, whence it is overtaken by a Dacia Duster driven by Stirling Moss..... ...apologies, I think someone must have slipped me some of whatever BPG was on last night.

Whats wrong with a Dacia ? Apparently they are ahead of the head company Renault these days who need workshop time for software updates. How quaint !

Enjoy the race - I watched it live on Sky. Didn't want to wait until the highlights.

Yes what a race and showed how good Russell is as a driver. Should have won this race.

Really enjoyed it. Full of drama. F1 has become a bit more interesting again this year.

Probably still best not to start the job on Christmas Eve though. Just saying. ...it had a little sleep again (awoken by manually "bumping" the actuator). So, with a spare on hand, the job is now jobbed. (Frankly, it's not the most difficult - I rewired all the CH controls years ago, to get the programmer and thermostat(s) where I wanted them, not where the installers had convenientl, for them, put them, and the wiring centre is now conveniently less distant than the standard cable length (1m) on a replacement actuator. So, a couple of bits of floorboard up, four wires off/four wires on, switch actuators (2 screws) replace the boards and Bob's your mother's brother). So far so good; keep your fingers crossed* (*this is a note to me )
