Indeed, that is a possible alternative approach, and if none of the PHEVs really convince me, the Kia E-Niro is still very much on the shortlist. That was one reason for starting to look well in advance, as if this is where I end up, the waiting list is pretty long.
We have an A3 convertible, 1.5 TFSI, which is fine on long runs as much as short. But if I take that somwhere on my own, SWMBO would be left with an automatic. She can drive this perfectly well but doesn't like it.
But there is a plus point with a 'pure' EV. The long trips are only twice a month or so, but we do 10-mile round trips several times a week for one reason or another. A PHEV would need charging each time, whereas for something like the E-Niro it would be far less often.
I know this is debatable, but I'd quite like to be able to do the short trips on electric power for environmental reasons as well as financial.

Ten mile round trip should easily be doable in a PHEV. Well most.
Theoretical range of an XC40 for example is less than 28 miles I think. I'd recharged my demo up to about 14 miles for yesterday evening and did a return trip of about 16 miles on electric. Another experiment today was one of the local trips I do is to the Tesco supermarket. A 30 minute charge got me 3 miles range so enough to cover a return journey and the electric was free :-)
I'll give some feedback on the XC40.... some negatives my opinion but a good car. And I have the 330e next week albeit for less time.
